This project was for designing the logo for the new Maryville College Design Lab. I really enjoyed doing this type of project, designing simple but elegant designs to represent a company. I did not struggle with the designing part of the process, but had slight difficulty in printing and getting everything to fit on the screen without getting cut off in print. Other than having to print and print and print till it fit everything went well.

East meets West Tea Co.

The requirements for designing packaging and an identity for East meets West Tea Co. was to create: the logo/ identity for East meets West, packaging of a box-like structure that houses 25 tea bags, packaging for each individual tea bag, and design of the tea bag and shape of the tea bag. I researched organic tea companies and logos, packaging, and color selections, to help me create ideas. WE had to consider paper selection and environmental issues that come from packaging, and create a design less harmful to the environment. For my product design, there are two products. First is a bamboo mug with a tea infuser and loose tea that is in a biodegradable bag. The second part you go buy after purchasing the mug is just the loose tea itself in its biodegradable bag. The label is going to be made from egg carton with plant seed dispersed in it and biodegradable ink. After purchasing this product and using al of the tea, you take the empty tea bag fill it with soil and plant the label inside of it, keep it indoors till the plant reaches about 5-6 inches then plant outside in the ground. And the only product left is the bamboo mug and the tea infuser which is reusable.

In putting this packaging idea into a model I had difficulty with the label. For one I had to size it right on the computer so that when I printed it out it would wrap around the mug, and also size it again to fit around the tea bag so when it is sold individually. Not to mention making sure I cut the paper right at the end so that it would hook together and would not need adhesive. Another issue I ran into was my label was laid out horizontally on the screen, and although I saved it in every format, when I went to the printers it would not let them change the orientation of the paper. Therefor I had to run back to my room and rotate the label then re-save it in every format. If I would have just brought my laptop with me it would have saved me time and gas. Then the color… The color I saw on my computer screen did not show up on the paper, it turned out much lighter when it was printed, so that is another issue to take into consideration. Other than that everything worked out fairly well.

Products down a Walmart Isle

It was an assignment for us to go to Wal-Mart or Target and walk down any aisle and look on the back of each product to see how many focus on environmental practices. Here are the results for laundry detergent aisle in Wal-Mart
Woolite HE had 0
Tide, Cheer, Dreft, All, Gain, Era, and Arm&Hammer:
was made of 25% recycled plastic and contained 0 phosphate
Great Value and Sun:
did not show any recycling information
Purex had a biodegradable formula, container was recyclable, but didn’t have any seals
Green Works had the seals of: safer chemistry, 95% natural, and sierra club
however the most sustainable product was the
Seventh Generation which described how the product was not tested on animals and contained no animal ingredients, its recyclable. Then on the inside of the label it tells how if you switch to this detergent you are saving 370,000 barrels of oil.

Sersas Poster

For this project we were given the opportunity to work with a client and meet their deadline and their request. This poster was made for the Southeast Regional Symposium on African Studies (SERSAS). The client requested to connect past and present civil society in Africa, and to use red, green, and gold in the design. I chose to use the actual continent and take patterns seen in different countries in Africa and connect them in a way so the viewer can make that connection.This piece has drastically changed from the first draft, where I had the patterns running across the top of the poster and the continent filled with the text and information, with the SERSAS title running vertically down the side. This did not seem to be the best way to present what ideas i had. So after much revision and help from peers and my professor I now have my final draft complete, and I am much more pleased with how it turned out than the status of it in the first draft.

Personal Identity

Wow this was the hardest project of the term. It is definitely hard to create a design that expresses you as a person, but also you as a person in the professional world. To start this project off, I asked a few of the people who know me best, to describe me in 5 words. Then from that list I found the words that were repeated, which were: joyful, funny, mischievous, and energetic. Now incorporating these into a letter head was pretty difficult, but as I created more thumbnails it became a little easier, but harder at the same time, because I found different was to modify the designs into something new, but then after that I had to come up with something new. How ever the letter head I created was actually when I was putting a border around my initials, and I looked at it, then realized it looked like my initials. I have to say this was my favorite design I created, out of the 75 thumbnails, and I’m glad it worked so well to express me. I like how it looks like and organic shape at first, but then when you closer at it more closely you can see the letter forms of an “a” and a “b” emerge. I next incorporated i polka doted back ground to keep the letterhead a negative space so it stands out. I chose to use 2 colors, because 1 wasnt enough to express me, and 3 colors seemed like to much was going on. I chose blue and lime green, which go well together, and express me because they are my 2 favorite colors. I’m glad I picked this design because I can use it in the professional world, as a medical illustrator.

Social Action Poster

Recently I have given two speeches in my comp class on animal abuse. I wanted to bring awareness on a topic that wasnt really well-known. Therefore, I picked wild horses. I went with an image of two wild mustangs playing to show the freedom and joy that they have in the wild. Then I brought in the text telling that wild mustangs are being rounded up every year and shoved into corrals like sardines. Then the land where they once roamed free is the new home for cattle to graze. The mustangs are kept in these pins and are marked or branded with a code number. Then huge auctions are held to auction them off. many of them are headed straight to death, because slaughter houses come and buy large quantities of horses to kill them for meat, glue, jello, and other common products. Not many people know about what they suffer through, and that’s why I chose it as my topic; to bring awareness of what these poor creatures go through. While I enjoyed the project and creating it, at the same time it was heartbreaking.

Wow these projects keep getting better and better. Well my first two designs were not as successful as the final. One of my first designs was a diagram of a horse with close up pictures of interesting parts of Maverick’s (my horse) body. Then my second design was the process of making a hemp anklet. The pictures I took for this one did not turn out so well. I had trouble with the lighting and trying to brighten the image. During my process of making the first design I had pictures of every part of a horses body, so I attempted to make a photo collage of a horse. Sadly I didn’t have enough pictures. But my instructor thought this would turn out really strong, I was so excited to work on this project. I went back home the next weekend and took about 180 pictures. I ended up using 177 pictures in the collage. It was a long, but… really, really fun process. I love it. Hope you can enjoy it as much as I have and will.

Every time I worked on this assignment it was the highlight of my day. Working with an image of a horse and rider jumping, and trying to bring out detail was at times difficult and a fairly long process, but I enjoyed every minute. Trying to work with the font on the front and trying to find the right font to express the Equestrian Team and the history of the sport was rather challenging, but I think it came out better than what I started with. The back of the postcard needed an object that connected with the front of the postcard along with, if someone was to pick it up in the mail and see the back first they would immediately recognize it was about horseback riding. My first rough did not represent this well so that’s when I was given the idea to incorporate a riding helmet. I am very pleased with how the final postcard came out. Hope you enjoy it.

Kin Takahashi Tshirts

I really enjoyed working on this project. It was difficult at times but all together a blast. KT week is about people all over America comming to Maryville College and working together to build, repair, paint, plant, and have fun, but mainly have fun. For some people KT week is like their vacation. I wanted to incorporate the fun relaxed atmosphere that these people create. Brainstorming about how I could represent that, I thought of Life is Good, their shirts represent relaxation and having fun. I created my own stick figure “KIn”. One the blue tshirt, I showed “Kin” holding a paint brush with sploches of paint all over his clothes, and incorporated the KT logo on his shirt, because the majority of the people who volunteer KT week volunteered last year and they have that years shirt that they worked in. The red shirt I have “Kin” planting a little shrub, to show another way KT volunteers help our campus. Last but not least the green shirt. I wanted to show the diversity of the people who volunteer, and how they are holding a growing plant, which represents how they help our campus and community grow as one.

Murray State University KY Horse Show

This weekend, March 6-7 2010, My last horse show was in Kentucky and Murray State. I had heard many stories that the horses there were just shy of broke. Pretty much they are psycho. The first day I was in the Beginner walk, trot, canter class and I only needed 4 points to point out of the class into advanced walk, trot, canter class. I won first place, which got me 7 points. YAHOO Although the second day, it was my first advanced walk, trot, canter class and I didn’t place but I was not upset because my goal was to point out of beginner walk, trot, canter class.
